Florida Tech’s interdisciplinary science degree program is designed to provide broad scientific knowledge and a variety of technical skills. The flexible curriculum allows you to customize your studies to your interests and goals, and to specialize in virtually any scientific field.

Intended for students who are interested in a broad-based degree oriented toward the sciences or engineering, the B.S. in interdisciplinary science is ideal for students who plan graduate study in professional fields, science and engineering students in other majors who want a degree with wider scope and students seeking military careers.

The F.W. Olin Physical Sciences building, distinguished by the Ortega Observatory atop, offers advanced labs and facilities, including a geospace laboratory with a spacecraft instrumentation clean room.

Next door, the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex boasts a multimedia auditorium and numerous specialized research labs, such as geomaterials, robotics and magnetic levitation labs.

Across from the engineering building, the F.W. Olin Life Sciences building houses cutting-edge facilities like the High-Resolution Microscopy and Advanced Imaging Center and labs for genetic engineering, cellular and molecular biology, and marine biology.  

Adjacent is the state-of-the-art Gordon L. Nelson Health Sciences building, featuring over 20,000 square feet of classroom and lab space equipped with advanced tools such as atomic force microscopes and virtual dissection tables.

As a science student at Florida Tech you’ll also have access to the L3Harris Student Design Center, a one-of-a-kind, 12,000-square-foot building featuring remarkable equipment and resources. It’s a focus of activity for student research and design projects—and it's available for personal projects, as well.

Florida Tech’s location in a high-tech corridor makes us a great place for an interdisciplinary science degree. Our area has one of the largest high-tech workforces in the country, and that means numerous internship and employment opportunities for our students. Our 130-acre campus is in the heart of the Space Coast; NASA-Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral is just north of us.

When it’s time to kick back and relax, you’re just minutes from 72 miles of beautiful beaches, a short trip away from the Florida Keys or the Orlando theme parks and minutes away from the Indian River Lagoon, the most biodiverse estuary in North America.

But you won’t have to travel far for rest and relaxation. We also have a rich campus life with intramural and collegiate sports, over 200 campuswide student organizations and clubs and a wide variety of social activities.

Interdisciplinary science students at Florida Tech have the opportunity to participate in science internships in a wide range of fields and with a variety of companies. Because of the individualized nature of the program, students can choose a specific field or company that interests them.

Some of the organizations that provide science internships to Florida Tech students include L3Harris Technologies Inc., NASA, National Institutes of Health, Northrop Grumman Corp. and many more.

Science internships at these and many other companies provide our students with the opportunity to utilize their skills outside the classroom and forge connections that may grow into careers.

Careers in Interdisciplinary Science

Graduates often pursue careers in aerospace, environmental science, medicine, health technology and management, including roles in personnel and purchasing. An interdisciplinary background can be advantageous for many positions and further study, especially in professional fields.

The Interdisciplinary Science, B.S., Curriculum

The interdisciplinary science curriculum provides flexibility within a structured framework to ensure comprehensive knowledge and encourage focus on individual interests.

Working with your faculty advisor, you’ll develop a plan of study during your first semester. This plan will ensure a firm grounding in the sciences and let you start building upon your strengths as early as sophomore year.

You’ll complete the core curriculum, common to all Florida Tech bachelor’s degrees, and choose from a variety of science and engineering courses and electives. Most students graduate with one or more minors.

Whatever your area(s) of focus, you’ll take courses in interdisciplinary science, mathematics, communication, computer science and humanities. Liberal arts, physical or life science, technical and free electives round out your program. Your study will culminate in a capstone seminar and research project.

Interdisciplinary Science Research

As an interdisciplinary science student, you’ll participate in advanced research studies and complete a capstone research project focused on an important interdisciplinary topic. This will give you an enhanced job search portfolio and is the perfect preparation for graduate school or employment.

Students have internships and research experiences in fields that span science, engineering, business, psychology, aeronautics and humanities. Whether you want to conduct research in astrophysics, nanotechnology, international business, nuclear engineering, sustainability, air traffic control or another topic, it can be part of your interdisciplinary science research.

Professors actively promote student involvement in technical research, and students work alongside faculty on research concerning sustainability, high-energy physics, coastal management, international education, space systems, sports education and climate change, among other topics.

Research provides valuable experience with the tools and techniques necessary for science-related work.

For students planning to attend graduate school, one of the best preparations is to become an author on a published paper. Our professors make this goal attainable and have an excellent track record of undergraduate publications.

Build Connections Through Campus Organizations

Beyond the classroom, you can build leadership and professional experience through participation in academic organizations like S3—an organization that comprises the Florida Tech Student Astronomical Society (SAS) and student chapters of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS). 

Find educational, social and career development opportunities through our campus chapters of the American Chemical Society or Biomedical Engineering Society, or academic clubs like the Women in STEM CommitteeMarine Biological Society and Pre-Med Club. Florida Tech is also home to science-related honor societies, such as Tri-Beta.

Beyond clubs related to your area of study, you’ll find intramural and collegiate sports, more than 200 student-run organizations and a steady stream of campus events at Florida Tech.
